Baja Beginnings

More than two years ago, while on vacation in San Diego, I picked up a copy of The Baja Catch at a local tackle shop. Written by Gene Kira and Neil Kelly, The Baja Catch is a fantastic resource about all the great fishing areas found up and down the coastline of Baja California that are accessible with a small, cartopped boat.
After reading it through, and through again, I found myself daydreaming of long quiet days on the Sea of Cortez, catching more fish than I could count……but Shanna, my beautiful wife and wonderful cook, didn’t share the same enthusiasm (something about ‘stinky boys’), so I gave the book to Steve, an independent-always-available longtime adventure partner. By some amazing coincidence, fishing in the Sea of Cortez with a stinky boy was something he’d always wanted to do, so he didn’t even need to open the book before giving me the go-ahead. A month or two after the fire was kindled, we watched an incredible documentary called Dust To Glory about the historic Baja 1000 off-road race, and after seeing the beauty and simplicity of the country and its’ people, we knew it was time to make any wayward daydreams a reality.
